The vineyard comprises six blocks, all growing Cabernet Sauvignon. There are a total of 24,000 vines over 21 acres. The blocks vary in size, depending on the geography and the date of planting. The vines were originally planted in 2000, but succumbed to the red blotch in 2014. Replanted in 2015 and 2016, the vertical shoot position (VSP) trellised vines are now at their full maturity and vigor, pushing out 70-80 tons of grapes annually, translating to approximately 5,000 cases of wine.
The soil of Woodhawk Vineyards is well-suited for high-quality winegrape production. In a Sonoma County Soil Survey, the soil was mapped as Laughlin Loam. The unique slope and aspect of the vineyard provides maximum sunlight and leads to an early harvest.
There is room for growth on the nearly 70-acre property. We are already noting which areas might be best-suited for additional planting and look forward to increasing our vine count in the coming years.
